Fiction is a vague and general term for an imaginative work, usually in prose. Fiction is used in general of the novel, the short story, the novella and related genres. All the more extensively, fiction has come to incorporate storytelling with imaginary elements in any format, including writings, audio recordings, live theatrical performances, comics, animated or live-action films, television programs, games (most notably, role-playing and video games), and so on.

Every writer of fiction, although he may not adopt the dramatic form, writes in effect for the stage.

Fiction is normally debilitated into a spread of sorts: subsets of fiction, each separated by a particular bringing together tone or style; set of narrative techniques, archetypes, or other tropes; media content; or other popularly defined criterion.

Science fiction, The widest possible definition to the term SF would be to say that it deals wholly or in part with exotic, supernatural or speculative topics, for example, predicts or supposes technologies that aren’t realities at the time of the work’s creation: Jules Verne’s novel From the world to the Moon was published in 1865 and only in 1969 did astronaut Armstrong first land on the moon.

Historical fiction is a form of fictional narrative which reconstructs history and recreates it imaginatively. Both historical and fictional characters may appear. Though writing fiction, the good historical novelist researches his chosen period thoroughly and strives for verisimilitude. The supreme example of the historical novelists in English literature is Sir Walter Scott. In the novel Waverley, Sir Walter Scott’s fictional character Edward Waverley meets a figure from history, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and takes part in the Battle of Prestonpans. some other better known exponents are Conan Doyle, Zoe Oldenburg, T.h. White, Mary Renault, Carola oman, Mary Stuart, Alfred Duggan and Georgette Heyer.

Fictional works that unequivocally include supernatural, magical, or scientifically impossible elements are often classified under the genre of fantasy, including Lewis Carroll‘s Alice In Wonderland, J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series, and J. R. R. Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings. Creators of fantasy sometimes introduce imaginary creatures and beings like dragons and fairies.

Sub-genre of Fiction

Fiction has been divided in to three major sub-genre which are as follows;

  • Romance
  • Short story
  • Novel

Romance in verse were the works of fiction, or non-historical. Whatever else a romance maybe it is principally a form of entertainment. It may also be didactic but this is usually incidental. It contains the elements of fantasy, improbability, extravagance and naivete. It also suggests the elements of love, adventure, the marvelous and ‘mythic’. It is usually concerned with characters who live in the courtly world somewhat remote from everyday.

In 13th century romance was almost any sort of adventure story, be it chivalry or of love. Gradually more and more romances were written in prose. In medieval romance there were three min cycles: (a) matter of Britain, which included Arthurian mater derived from Breton lays; (b) the matter of Rome, which included stories of Alexander, the Trojan wars and Thebes; (c) the matter of France, most of which was about Charlemagne and his knights.

Short story is a piece of prose fiction, requiring anything from half an hour to one or two hours in its perusal. It is a story which concentrates on a unique or single effect and one in which the totality of effect is the main objective. In the end the shape has shown itself to be so flexible and susceptible of such a lot variety that its possibilities seem almost endless. For example it’s going to worry with a scene, an episode, an experience, an action, the exhibition of a personality or characters, the day’s events, a meeting, a conversation, a fantasy. . .

Some of the types of the short story are; myth, parable,folk tales, fairy story, fable, anecdote, exemplum, essay and character study. In athletic terms, if we take novella as a ‘middle-distance’ book, then the short story comes into 100/200 meter class. Nevertheless, there are extremely long short stories ( longer than the average novella ) and very short ones.

Novel is a long and fictitious prose narrative in which stress is laid upon the study of character in contradistinction to the romance, in which events are the important element. The term “Novel” is derived from the Italian word Novella meaning ‘tale or piece of news’, and now applied to a wide variety of writings whose only common attribute is that they are extended piece of questions.

The length of the novels varies greatly and there has been much debate on how long a novel is or should be- to the Reductio ad absurdum of when is a novel not a novel or a long short-story or a short novel novella. In contemporary practice, a novel will be between 60,000-70,000 words and ,say, 200,000.

The good end happily, the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means.
